Hydro jetting for Los Angeles sewer lines
Hydro jetting scours a sewer pipe clean with high-pressure water so the camera can see the wall and a liner can bond to it. In Los Angeles it also deals with roots, restaurant grease and decades of cast iron scale, and this page explains how the pressure is matched to the pipe.

Why cleaning comes first
A camera cannot evaluate a pipe wall it cannot see, and a liner cannot bond to a surface coated in grease or scale. In Los Angeles that makes hydro jetting the step between a backup and a decision. Water delivered at high pressure through a nozzle at the end of a hose cuts roots flush, strips grease, breaks the mineral and corrosion scale off cast iron and flushes everything toward the main. The second camera pass after jetting is the one that tells the truth about the pipe, and it is the pass the repair recommendation should be based on.
What is in a Los Angeles sewer line
Three kinds of material build up in the laterals and drains around Los Angeles County. Roots enter clay joints from the trees and hedges that have had fifty or sixty years to find them, and they grow into mats that catch everything passing through. Grease from kitchens cools on the pipe wall downstream of the sink and hardens in layers; in restaurants it gets past the interceptor in small amounts that add up. Scale forms inside cast iron as the metal corrodes, roughening the wall and narrowing the pipe until a four-inch drain carries the flow of a two-inch one. Each responds to the jetter differently, and the nozzle is chosen accordingly.
Matching pressure to the pipe
The jetter is powerful enough to damage a weak pipe, so the operator looks before cleaning. A camera pass identifies the material and any obvious fragility. Sound clay and plastic are cleaned at full working pressure with a root-cutting or rotating nozzle. Cast iron with heavy channeling is jetted with reduced pressure and a nozzle that cleans without blasting the thin remaining bottom. Orangeburg is treated with great care, because the fiber wall can delaminate; often it is cleaned only enough to see it and then scheduled for bursting. Where a section has collapsed, jetting stops short of it rather than forcing water into the soil around a Los Angeles foundation. The hose is also metered by footage, so the operator knows at every moment where the nozzle is relative to the defects the first camera pass recorded.
Jetting as preparation for lining
When a liner is planned, cleaning becomes a specification rather than a service. The host pipe has to be free of roots, grease and loose scale along its full length so the resin bonds and the liner sits round. After jetting, the camera confirms the wall is exposed and measures the run. Any root mass that the jetter could not remove, or a protruding tap from a branch line, is cut with a mechanical tool before the liner goes in. On a Los Angeles lateral this preparation and the lining itself usually fall within the same working day.
Maintenance jetting for buildings that cannot be repaired yet
Some owners in Los Angeles are not ready to line or burst: a building is being sold, a budget cycle has not arrived, or the pipe is in fair condition and simply collects grease. For them, jetting on a schedule keeps the line open. A restaurant, a laundromat or an apartment building with a known root joint can be put on an interval set by the first camera run and adjusted by what each subsequent cleaning finds. A typical pattern is a first cleaning that removes years of accumulation, a second a few months later that finds much less, and a settled interval after that. The recordings from each visit build a record of how fast the pipe is deteriorating, which makes the eventual repair decision an informed one.
After the cleaning
The owner receives the post-jetting recording and a short written note on the condition of the pipe: whether it needs nothing more, a maintenance interval, a sectional sleeve, a liner, or bursting. There is no pressure to repair a pipe that is merely dirty. Questions we hear about hydro jetting
How is jetting different from snaking a drain?+
A cable machine bores a hole through a blockage so water can pass; the material around the hole stays on the pipe wall. Jetting uses water at high pressure from a nozzle that sprays backward and sideways, pulling itself up the pipe and scouring the full circumference. Roots are cut, grease is stripped and scale is broken off and flushed to the main.
Can jetting damage an old pipe?+
It can if the pressure and nozzle are wrong for the pipe. Thin cast iron, Orangeburg and badly cracked clay are jetted at reduced pressure with a nozzle chosen for the material, and the technician runs a camera first to see what is there. On a sound pipe the water does no harm; on a fragile one the operator adjusts rather than forces.
Does jetting fix roots in a Los Angeles clay lateral permanently?+
No. It cuts the roots back to the pipe wall and restores flow, and the camera then shows the joints they came through. The roots will return through the same joints, usually within a year or two. A permanent fix seals the joints, which is what a liner or a sectional sleeve does after the jetting is complete.
How frequently does a restaurant kitchen line need jetting?+
That depends on how much grease gets past the interceptor and on the condition of the pipe. A restaurant line in sound condition may be jetted on a quarterly or semiannual schedule; one with internal scale or root intrusion collects grease faster and needs it more often until the pipe is repaired. The first camera run sets the interval.
